Story

«Broken Body» was created due to Kulikovska's observation of the actual state of the space of Kyiv and detailed study of its sculptural installation. In 2012, the UEFA Euro 2012 took place in Kyiv, so the space of the city was reorganized and even rebuilt. Maria Kulikovska, as an architect, analyzed the space of Kyiv. She began exploring the role of the city as a public body and documenting the state of the city when it changes. «Broken Body» became the art answer-rethinking of the urban environment. The installation was made from local broken asphalt and shown at Lavra Art Gallery.

In 2014, the Ukrainian landscape was reorganized and deconstructed and broken in some places: the central square of Kyiv – Maidan Nezalezhnosti became the main place of the Revolution of Dignity, and in East Ukraine the war began. The political and military actions transform the body of public space significantly. Of the space, which still was one of the central themes for the researching and fixation in the art form. Rethinking of Kulikovska's «Broken Body» from 2012 became decisive. The artist tried to find a common in different contexts and to create a work-as-rethink of other local landscapes, but to use the same instruments and materials. Therefore, the new version of «Broken Body» was recreated and shown at Saatchi Gallery in London, and the material for the performative installation was found right on the street.
